Here is the new Garmin touch screen but it's expensive.

This is the Bendix AV8OR which is about half the price of the Garmin.

I recently purchased a Garmin Area 500 (I believe the one Mike was reffering to). It provides a moving map display that is equivalent to a sectional chart (very nice). It has a ground Proxi warning system (which isn't much good for PPC's because if you'r below 500 feet it will warn you, but you can turn that feature OFF). It is also capable of giving you traffic alerts (if you have a transponder, which I don't). Its great for flight planning and I have found it easy to use. I especially like the panel mode which gives an air speed indicator, altimeter, rate of climb, turn indicator as well as an HSI display. Its all based on GPS but it seems to work well.

There are several apps available for the iPhone that are handy.....including sectional.....and some multi-function GPS apps. There is also an older Garmin....the iQue series....that you can get used online.....runs Windows mobile and several good pilot apps......GPS and sectionals......might be worth looking at. I used the Garmin till i got my iPhone.....

What is your favorite iPhone app for PPC flying?

Re: Are ther any touch screen gps units out there for us flyers?

The main functions I like to have in view are speed and trip time.....I use "aSmartHUD" a lot......."Skycharts" is a great iPhone sectional......with real-time tracking so you see exactly where you are on the sectional. I've also used "Gps" and "gpsCompass" .....many let you see the track of where you've been, use waypoints, etc......I gave a dozen different ones to play with. You can decide what features you'd like and look for something to fit......I use a sportband case that straps to arm or leg....used a plastic bicycle mount on the frame once and my iPhone bounced out right after takeoff!! Took a few minutes to find in the grass but it was ok! The washing machine, however, is another story....!

Just curious ...
Does the Iphone work when you have NO bars (the receiving kind ..) ???

If not, what's the use ??

If yes, seems like a better deal, no ??

Re: Are ther any touch screen gps units out there for us flyers?

Most of the mapping applications depend on external data. Therefore, some reception is required. Keep in mind that a PPC at a few hundred feet will get reception in many areas where the phone wouldn't get it on the ground.

Danal,

Try this site. www.adventurepilot.com. I have seen this product in person, and it is really cool. I also know that the owner had a small issue with a line through the screen and the unit was advanced replaced immediately, so the service is good. If I didn't already have my Lowrance, I would get this one.

Steve.

That is a pretty nice unit Steve. For $499 + $69/year for updates, if I were in GA again, I think I would have one!

Re: Are ther any touch screen gps units out there for us flyers?

I did find an iPhone/iPad app that caches charts. "Skycharts". It works with NO reception, assuming you've downloaded the chart prior to the trip. Supports IFR, VFR (i.e. sectional) and Terminal Area charts. And, has the approach plates and airport/facility data for airports on each cached chart.

Requires GPS in the device; iPhone 3, 3G, 3GS, and 4 all have this. WiFi only iPads do not. WiFi/3G iPads do have GPS.

Note that you don't have to pay the 3G subscription on a WiFi/3G iPad... the GPS chip works totally independent of the 3G chip. And, you can turn the 3G data plan on/off by 30 day increment (no contract). So, if you wish to get an iPad to run this app, and NOT pay for 3G data, you can do that.

Anyway... if you already have one of the devices, it is a great app.

$20 for the "Pro" version. Includes the charts for a year.

I use my Garmin nuvi, it does everything you need. Use it in the off road mode.
